What is tajweed?

Tajweed literally means "to make something excellent". In recitation it means giving every letter its due: pronouncing it from its correct articulation point, with its correct characteristics, and applying the rules that affect it.

• Isti'adha: begin your recitation by seeking refuge in Allah from Satan.
• Basmala: say it at the beginning of every surah except At-Tawbah.
• Tartil: recite at a calm, measured pace, as the Quran commands (Al-Muzzammil, 73:4).
